Screen problems and their real causes
| What you see | Common cause | Usually |
|---|---|---|
| Vertical or horizontal lines | Panel driver (COF) or flex cable, sometimes T-con | Repairable in many cases |
| Half screen dark or duplicated | T-con board or panel driver | Repairable |
| Wrong colours, negative-looking picture | T-con board, main board output | Repairable |
| Dark screen but sound works | Backlight failure — not the screen | Repairable (see backlight repair) |
| Cracks, ink-like spread, impact mark | Physically broken panel | Needs screen replacement |
A quick self-check: shine a phone torch close to a dark screen. If you can faintly see the picture, the screen is fine and the backlight has failed.
Sony TV screen replacement — honest advice
If the panel is cracked or a driver fault is beyond repair, the screen (panel) has to be replaced. We source a compatible panel for your exact model and fit it with the original frame and boards. Because a panel is the most expensive part of a TV, a replacement on a large or older model can cost a large share of a new TV's price — we tell you that upfront so you can decide, and we never push a replacement that isn't worth it.
Panel availability depends on the model; we confirm availability and the full price before ordering.
What we check before recommending a repair
- T-con board voltages and signals to the panel
- Panel flex cables and connectors (a loose or damaged cable causes many lines)
- Main board video output — to rule out a board fault that looks like a screen fault
- Backlight — to rule out a dark-screen backlight failure
